FusionMix: From Disney to Drinks
Bartender and FusionMix founder Michael Gonzalez’s background is as unique as his cocktails. After seven years as a performer at Disney World and
Universal Studios, the Kansas native returned to Kansas City and turned a simple favor, bartending at a cousin’s wedding, into a high energy business built on thorough preparation and a sincere dedication to creating joyful guest experiences.
“I built a business based on elevated service, and that’s what I truly love to do,” Michael says. “You have to match the energy of the event. It’s somebody’s very special day and I know what I can offer my clients.”
In 2024, he officially launched FusionMix, and in less than a year he has already worked more than 45 weddings and special events throughout the area. Events he’s created and served at Ball include wedding receptions, quinceañeras and, something that has become something of a specialty for him, Indian weddings.
Michael adds his own touch of creativity to the bar menu to make those colorful celebrations even more unique. “I make a traditional cocktail based on the culture of the event,” he explains. “For Indian weddings I’ve created tamarind spicy syrup, mango lassi syrup, blackberry mint, and I also do infused mocktails to elevate the experience.”
Practicality in a pinch
Michael has earned a well-deserved reputation as “the emergency bartender.” He recounts how his attention to detail, level of preparation, and quick thinking saved the day – or evening, rather – when the lights suddenly went out and a wedding reception went dark. “I had LED motion sensor lights for the bathrooms and 60 feet of fairy lights that I strung across the tables, and a big Bluetooth speaker for music.” The couple completed their first dance and cut the cake before the power came back on. “It ended up being awesome!” he said with pride.
Staying calm under pressure and turning challenges into memorable experiences have played a big part in Michael’s success so far. Fortunately, he does not have to depend on those skill sets when he works an event at Ball.
“I really like the layout, and they have everything that I need,” he says. “I’ve promoted Ball quite a bit when clients have asked me about venues because the location is so convenient. I really enjoy being a preferred vendor there.”
