Spring has sprung, gardens are blooming, love is in the air – and walking down the aisle!
An almost infinite variety of colors, tones, and practices find their way into every wedding season, from Queen Victoria’s introduction of the white wedding dress in 1840 to Kate Middleton’s Lily of the Valley bouquet 171 years later. Whatever the source, the trends followed by brides of any era make the first warm-weather weddings of the year as distinctive and memorable as only they can be.
“A lot of the weddings we are seeing now are going back to that classic look, especially in the spring,” says Barbara Keller, owner of All A’ Bloom Florist, a mainstay of downtown Lee’s Summit, Missouri for over 20 years. “We are seeing a lot of pale pinks and lots of pastels. A lot more soft, gardening styles.”
Pantone’s color of the year always finds its way into bridal season, she says:
“This year it’s Peach Fuzz, a peachy, blushing color, and it has had a big influence on what we’re seeing.”
Anything that was in style invariably finds its way back in, and Keller notes the renewed popularity of Baby’s Breath and carnations. She often bunches carnations together to create a single large, lush “bloom.” People are surprised to learn are today’s carnations are most definitely not their mother’s prom night corsage.
Increasingly popular options include using flowers that are distinctly “spring,” with short blooming seasons. It’s an easy way to stamp the ceremony with seasonal touches. Forsythia, lilacs, and wildflowers, all short-lived and more treasured because of it, are seasonal blossoms that are easily incorporated into any configuration. And the lifespan of hydrangeas is easily extended by potting them, to line the aisle or decorate the table.
Some flowers are truly perennial in their popularity, such as roses. However, certain colors become en vogue, and spring 2024 is seeing unusually colored roses at the forefront. Quicksand, mauve, and Mondial roses, which come in subtle coffee, pink, or green hues, are the stars of many a spring bridal bouquet.
