It’s now officially summer wedding season!
You may get invited to multiple weddings this season. What to wear will depend on venue, destination, indoor or outdoor wedding, time of day, dress code, and more. Get tips for the perfect outfit for someone’s perfect day from Ball below.
It is better to be overdressed than underdressed at a wedding. Most will fall into one of three categories — black tie/formal, semi-formal, or casual. If the invitation, the couple’s website, or venue doesn’t make it clear, ask the bride.
Black Tie/Formal for Summer
For men black tie/formal means a tuxedo. Black is always in style, but in summer midnight blue is a stylish alternative. Women will want a long dress, but warm weather makes lighter, silky fabrics a great choice. Pick shoes based on location and venue, and while heels are almost always in they may not be suitable for beachside.
Semi-Formal for Summer
For men semi-formal means a suit, usually in black, navy, or grey with the addition of a colorful tie. Women can have some fun here as well, such as a brightly colored, off-the-shoulder maxi dress.
Casual for Summer
Men get to be more relaxed with a casual dress code. Khakis or dark jeans with a blazer and an open-collared shirt or polo usually work. Women can lean into shorter hemlines for their dresses, especially this summer. Quirky details and eye-catching accessories are in style this year, and other great options are strapless, halter, or sleeveless tops, perhaps with a light shawl for when the sun goes down. Sandals or wedges are good for footwear, especially if the terrain isn’t suitable for heels.
Of course, you and your date want to look top-notch, but make sure you aren’t competing or trying to upstage the special couple on their big day! Remember to pay attention to the weather, the venue, and ask about the dress code if you’re unsure, and you will look great all wedding season long!
