Wedding Party Responsibilities – Who does what?

You are engaged — congratulations! Now you need to choose your wedding party! Siblings? Best friends from childhood? College friends? Work friends? Siblings of your soon to be spouse? Who you have in your wedding and how many people is completely up to you! You don’t have to have a wedding party, but most people do, and sometimes its nice for others to take some of the responsibility off your shoulders!

Most people have at least a maid/matron of honor and a best man; after that, you can have as many or as few bridesmaids and groomsmen as you like. Then, there are the flower girl and ring bearer, mother and father of the bride, mother and father of the groom, officiant, ushers, attendants, and various other roles, depending on the type and size of wedding. Let’s take a look at expected responsibilities for the most common roles in a wedding party.

Maid/Matron of Honor

  • The bride’s right-hand woman!
  • Usually a best friend or sister
  • Plans bridal shower and bachelorette party
  • Stays in contact with all bridesmaids and communicates updates
  • Helps the bride pick out her dress and get ready on the big day
  • Holds bouquet and arranges dress train during ceremony
  • Gives a toast at the reception

Best Man

  • Plans the bachelor party
  • Gets groom to the wedding on time!
  • Handles transportation and communication for groomsmen
  • In charge of rings at the ceremony
  • Gives a toast at the reception

Bridesmaids

  • Help the Maid/Matron of Honor in planning the shower, bachelorette party and other activities
  • Assist with DIY wedding details and decorations, if needed
  • Keep dance floor going at reception
  • Help with gifts and cleaning after everything is over

Groomsmen

  • Help the Best Man plan the bachelor party
  • Walk bridesmaids down the aisle
  • Assist with keeping the dance floor moving
  • Decorate the car for after reception

Ushers

  • Walk guests to their seats at the ceremony
  • May even walk other wedding party members or family to their seats as well
  • Help answer questions from guests

Attendants

  • Watch over the guest book, and possibly the cake/food tables
  • Help guests get into ceremony on time
  • Answer guest questions
  • Help with gifts

Mother of the Bride

  • Helps the bride choose her dress
  • Often assists with planning and decorating details
  • Helps with wedding invites
  • Supports the bride in getting ready the day of the ceremony
  • Often helps pay for the wedding

Father of the Bride

  • Often helps pay for the wedding
  • Walks bride down the aisle and gives her away
  • Father/daughter dance at reception
  • Usually gives speech at reception

Mother of the Groom

  • Often helps with wedding planning
  • Helps with wedding invites
  • Plans and often pays for rehearsal dinner
  • Mother/son dance at reception

Father of the Groom

  • Often pays for the rehearsal dinner
  • Gives speech at the rehearsal dinner
